Planetary gear reducers are one kind of gearboxes. Planetary reducer plays a crucial role and is widely used in modern life, planetary gear reducers can be used in smart homes, Intelligent Communication, consumer electronics, and industrial automation. But, in the industrial application do you know how to choose the right planetary reducer for your CNC machine?

As we all know, a reduction gear works with a servo motor, also called a servo gearbox, using the planetary reducer to achieve higher torque, lower output speed, or optimal mass inertia ratio. The following factors need to be considered when you choose the right planetary reducer:

Output torque of planetary reducer:

Output torque is an important parameter in selecting a planetary gear reducer. Gear deceleration reduces the relative high speed of the motor, and provides a lower speed at the output end.

Gear ratio of the planetary reducer:

Generally, the planetary Reduction Ratio = RPM-servo motor / RPM-gearbox output.

You can treat the gear ratio of the planetary reducer as the correlation between the number of teeth of two different gears. This means that the gears with larger circumference will have more gear teeth, so the relationship between the circumference of the two gears can also give an accurate gear ratio.

Speed (RPM) of planetary reducer:

The higher the speed, the bigger of gear ratio of the system. If the number of teeth of the input gear is greater than the number of teeth of the output gear, the speed of the output shaft increases. In general, the output speed can be determined by dividing the input speed by the gear ratio. The higher the ratio of the planetary gearboxes, the lower the output speed.

Backlash of planetary reducer:

In precision applications with load reversals like Robotics, Automation, CNC Machines, etc., backlash is crucial for accuracy and positioning. Backlash is the angle at which the output shaft of a gearbox can rotate without the input shaft moving or the gap between the teeth of two adjacent gears.

You can see the planetary gears in the below application:

The CNC router's tool head uses planetary gearboxes;

CNC Routers use planetary gearboxes;

At least four or more machining centers and CNC milling machines use planetary gearboxes;

At least three or more CNC lathes and turning centers use planetary gearboxes;

At least three or more digital grinding machines and electric discharge machines use planetary gearboxes...
