There are several types of planetary gearboxes. They are also known as epicyclic gearboxes, planetary gear reducers, planetary reducers,  planetary gearhead, and planetary gearboxes. That is a type of gearbox that uses a system of gears and rotating components. To transmit torque and speed between a motor and an output.  Here are some of the most common types, let's see the common type and application.

In-line planetary gearbox

An inline planetary gearbox is a planetary gearbox. The input and output shafts are arranged in a straight line. The gearbox consists of a central sun gear, several planetary gears, and an outer gear ring.

You can change the number of teeth on the sun gear, planetary gears, and ring to achieve various gear ratios.

Inline planetary gearboxes are typically used in high-power applications. Examples include industrial machinery that requires a compact design. They offer high efficiency, high torque density, and low backlash.

Coaxial planetary gearbox

Coaxial planetary gearboxes, also known as inline planetary gearboxes. It is a type of planetary gearbox in which the input and output shafts are arranged coaxially, i.e. on the same shaft.

Coaxial planetary gearboxes are often used in automotive applications. Examples include automatic transmissions, which require high gear ratios.

Single-stage planetary gearbox

A single-stage planetary gearbox is a gear system. It uses only one set of gears to achieve a desired speed or torque output.

The system usually consists of three main components: the sun gear, the planetary gear, and the ring.

Single-stage planetary gearboxes are typically used for high torque and low-speed output. Examples include heavy machinery, industrial equipment, and automotive transmissions.

Multi-stage planetary gearbox

Multi-stage planetary gearboxes have two or more sets of gears arranged in series to achieve higher gear ratios.

Multi-stage planetary gearboxes are typically used where high torque is required. and a wide range of output speeds. Examples include heavy machinery, construction equipment, and wind turbines. They can accomplish high gear ratios in a compact and lightweight package.

Offset planetary gearbox

Offset planetary gearboxes, also known as parallel shaft planetary gearboxes. It is a planetary gearbox in which the input and output shafts are arranged in an offset or parallel configuration.

Offset planetary gearboxes are often used where compact construction and high torque density are required. For example, in robotics and automation, where space is limited. They offer high efficiency, low backlash, and smooth operation.

Suppose you’ll choose types of planetary gearboxes that are reliable and suitable. Look for the types of planetary gearboxes that are made from high-quality materials and reliable brands of planetary gearboxes.
